Format

What the Bain & Company assessment centre looks like

1

First Round — Case Interview

40-50 minutes

1 interviewer (Manager/Principal)

Candidate-led case interview. You receive a business problem and work through analysis, data interpretation, and recommendation.

2

First Round — Experience Interview

30-40 minutes

1 interviewer

Behavioural interview testing leadership, personal impact, or problem-solving. Similar to McKinsey's PEI format. Deep dive into one story for 15-20 minutes.

3

Final Round — Case Interview

40-50 minutes

1 Partner

Harder case with more ambiguity. Partners probe your assumptions and test your ability to think under pressure with incomplete data.

4

Final Round — Experience Interview

30-40 minutes

1 Partner

Deeper experience interview with more senior interviewers. Tests cultural fit, maturity, and self-awareness alongside leadership evidence.

Prep plan

48-hour preparation plan

148 hours before

Practise 3-4 case interviews — focus on hypothesis-driven, candidate-led format.

Prepare 3 anchor stories: leadership, personal impact, and results orientation. Each must have quantified outcomes.

Research Bain & Company's recent work — check their publications, case studies, and industry reports.

Review market sizing frameworks — you may need to estimate a number under pressure.

Prepare your "Why Bain & Company?" answer with specific references to the firm's culture, methodology, or people.

224 hours before

Do one final practice case — time yourself to ensure you're comfortable within 40 minutes.

Check the Financial Times for any major business news.

Prepare 3-4 questions for partners — about their career, projects, or the firm's strategy.

Plan your outfit and route. Smart business casual or business formal depending on the firm.

Get 8 hours of sleep. Case interviews require sharp mental performance.

3Morning of

Review your anchor stories and case frameworks one final time.

Scan morning headlines — interviewers may reference current events.

Arrive 15 minutes early. Be personable with everyone you meet.

Stay energised between rounds — the quality of your final interview matters as much as your first.

Evaluation

What Bain & Company interviewers evaluate

Results orientation

Bain is "results, not reports." They want evidence you've driven tangible outcomes, not just analysis.

True team player

"A Bainie never lets another Bainie fail" is their mantra. Team culture is the #1 differentiator. Show genuine collaboration.

Hypothesis-driven thinking

Start cases with a hypothesis, then test it. Bain values this approach over exhaustive analysis.

Passion and energy

Bain culture is high-energy. Show enthusiasm genuinely. Low-energy interviews don't pass, even with strong content.

Commercial instinct

They want people who understand business intuitively. Follow the FT, have opinions on companies.

Personal impact

Like McKinsey, they want evidence of making things happen — but with more emphasis on the team dimension.

Avoid

Common mistakes at Bain & Company assessment centres

Jumping to conclusions in case interviews without laying out a structure first. Always pause, structure your thinking, then proceed.

Having only one anchor story. Different interviewers test different competencies — prepare at least 3 distinct examples.

Not asking clarifying questions at the start of a case. Good candidates confirm understanding before diving in.

Failing to synthesise at the end. Partners want a clear recommendation, not just analysis. State your answer, then support it.

Being thrown by unexpected case types. Practise market sizing, profitability, market entry, and M&A cases.

Treating the experience interview as less important than the case. It carries equal weight.
