Complete Guide to Consulting Spring Programme Applications 2027

Everything an early-stage student needs to know about consulting insight and spring programmes: what they are, the application process, case-style assessments and how these programmes can support later internship applications.

Section 1

What a consulting spring programme is

A consulting spring or insight programme is an early-careers programme designed to introduce students to consulting. Format, duration, pay and eligibility vary by firm. McKinsey's UK Discover is a two-day event. BCG's London Insight Programme is a two-day course. Bain's Consulting Kickstart is an interactive virtual series. Deloitte's Spring into Deloitte runs over two days and is paid.

Programmes often include firm presentations, workshops, case-style exercises and networking, but the structure varies by firm. Many programmes are aimed at first-year students on 3-year degrees and second-year students on 4-year degrees, although eligibility varies.

These programmes can help students explore consulting early and may support later internship applications, but internship hiring still follows separate application processes. At some firms, participation may strengthen later internship applications or help candidates build familiarity with the firm and its process.

These programmes can be highly competitive, especially at top consulting firms.

How to apply for a consulting spring programme

Your CV

Top consulting firms often look for strong academic performance, leadership and structured thinking:

Academic record: consulting firms screen on grades. Strong academic performance is important, particularly at top firms.

Leadership evidence: society president, sports captain, event organiser, any role where you drove outcomes through others.

Structured thinking: maths, economics, engineering, or science backgrounds signal analytical ability. If your degree is in humanities, compensate with quantitative extracurriculars.

Concise, clean formatting. One page. Every bullet point should demonstrate impact.

Cover letter

Some firms use application forms and written motivation answers rather than traditional cover letters. Where a written response is required, demonstrate three things:

1

Why consulting? Show you understand the problem-solving, client-facing nature of the work. Reference specific types of projects that interest you.

2

Why this firm? Differentiate between firms (their approaches genuinely differ). Reference specific practice areas, industries, or values.

3

Why you? Evidence of leadership, analytical capability, and the ability to work in teams under pressure.

Application questions

Common consulting application question themes:

Problem solving: "Tell us about a time you solved a complex problem." The answer should show structured, logical thinking.

Leadership: "Describe a time you influenced others to achieve a shared goal." Consulting is fundamentally about influencing clients without formal authority.

Curiosity: "What business issue are you most interested in right now?" Show commercial awareness and genuine intellectual curiosity.

Online assessments firms may use

Some consulting firms use problem-solving assessments, while others still use more traditional online assessment formats. The exact test depends on the firm and programme.

McKinsey Solve

Varies

Providers: McKinsey proprietary

McKinsey Solve uses game-based problem-solving tasks rather than a traditional multiple-choice test. You cannot revise it like a standard test, but familiarity with the format can help. The exact format and duration can vary.

BCG assessments

Varies

Providers: BCG

BCG may use interviews and other assessment formats depending on the programme and role.

Other online assessments

Varies by firm

Providers: Various providers

Some firms, especially larger professional-services employers, use online assessments that may include numerical, verbal or other work-based elements.

Preparation tips

1

For McKinsey Solve: the assessment is easier when you approach it systematically. Take time to understand the data before making decisions.

2

For other assessments: practise the format beforehand. The first time you see it should not be the real thing.

3

Check the firm's instructions carefully for what to expect.

Practice a psychometric test

Some consulting assessments differ from banking-style psychometrics, while others still use similar testing formats. Familiarise yourself with the general format below before facing the real thing.

Section 7

The case interview: the defining feature of consulting recruitment

The case interview is what makes consulting recruitment different from banking or law. In a case interview, you are given a business problem ("Our client's profits have declined by 20%. What should they do?") and asked to solve it live, out loud, with the interviewer.

This is not a test of business knowledge. It is a test of structured thinking, communication, and composure. You are expected to break the problem into components, ask clarifying questions, analyse data when provided, and arrive at a recommendation.

Case-interview volume varies by firm and process. Candidates may face more than one case interview during recruitment. Case-interview length also varies by firm.

Common question types

Profitability

"Our client, a UK retailer, has seen profits decline by 15% over the past two years. Why, and what should they do?" Start by separating revenue and cost. Then dig into each.

Market entry

"Should our client, a European bank, enter the Indian market?" Structure around market attractiveness, competitive landscape, client capability, and potential entry modes.

Market sizing

"How many coffee cups are sold in London per day?" Break it into components: population, working population, coffee drinkers, cups per person per day. Show your working.

Fit / PEI

Personal Experience Interview (used by McKinsey): "Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult situation." Similar to competency questions but with deeper probing on your role and impact.

How firms score your answers

Problem structuring: can you break a complex problem into logical components?

Analytical rigour: can you work with data, make calculations, and draw accurate conclusions?

Communication: can you think out loud clearly and explain your reasoning as you go?

Creativity: can you generate hypotheses and consider non-obvious angles?

Synthesis: can you pull your findings together into a clear recommendation?

Practice a video interview question

Some firms may use video interviews or other recorded assessment stages. Practising on camera builds the communication and structuring skills that transfer directly to live case interviews. Try one question below.

Section 9

What happens during the programme

Consulting spring and insight programmes are usually short, but format and content vary by firm. Common elements can include workshops, group exercises and networking, but the schedule varies.

1

Case workshop

Varies

A structured workshop teaching you how to approach business problems. You may work through a case study as a group, guided by a consultant. These programmes are designed to help students learn about consulting and may also contribute to how firms view participants.

2

Team exercise

Varies

Work with other participants on a business challenge and present your recommendations. Assessors may evaluate your analytical contribution, team skills, and presentation quality.

3

Networking

Throughout

Informal sessions with consultants at different levels. Ask about their project experience, the firm's culture, and what they look for in candidates.

How to stand out during the week

Prepare basic case interview frameworks before the programme. Even a surface-level understanding of profitability trees and market sizing approaches will help during workshops.

Ask thoughtful questions that show commercial curiosity. "What is the most interesting project you have worked on recently?" opens good conversations.

Be collaborative during group exercises. Consulting is a team sport. The best candidates build on others' ideas rather than pushing their own.
