Section 1
What a first-year insight programme is
A first-year insight programme is an early-careers scheme run by law firms for eligible early-stage students. Some are one- or two-day events, while others include a longer development programme. Clifford Chance SPARK spans nine months with in-person and virtual content. Linklaters Pathfinder starts with two days in person and continues with a six-month virtual development series.
Programmes often include firm presentations, skills sessions, networking and interactive exercises, but the structure varies by firm. Some firms include an assessment element in the application process or during the programme.
These programmes help students explore commercial law and, at some firms, can strengthen or accelerate later vacation-scheme applications. Linklaters Pathfinder, for example, explicitly fast-tracks participants to a vacation-scheme assessment centre. Some firms offer other forms of structured follow-on support after first-year programmes.
First-year insight programmes are still competitive. Application requirements vary by firm and may include an online form, written questions, online assessments and sometimes an interview.

The 2027 insight programme timeline
Application timing varies by firm. Some programmes open in autumn or winter, while others run later. Always check the firm's careers site for current deadlines.
Learn about different law firms, attend freshers' fair events, and join the law society. Start developing basic commercial awareness. Check each firm's careers page for programme details and eligibility.
Applications may open at different points in the academic year depending on the firm. Linklaters Pathfinder 2026 opened in December 2025 and closed in February 2026. HSF Kramer First Year applications ran from January to March 2026. Check each firm individually.
Some firms use online assessments, critical-thinking tests, or screening interviews. The format varies by firm and programme.
Offer timing varies by firm and programme.
Programme dates vary by firm and may take place over different parts of the academic year. Linklaters Pathfinder ran across April to September. HSF Kramer's scheme window ran September to March.

How to apply for a first-year insight programme
Your CV
The bar may be lower than for vacation schemes, but a well-presented CV still matters:
Education first: A-Level grades, university, course, any predicted grades available.
Extracurriculars: law society, debating, mooting, volunteering, part-time work. Frame everything in terms of transferable skills.
Keep it to one page. Clean formatting. No errors.
Cover letter
Some firms ask short written motivation answers rather than a traditional cover letter:
Why commercial law? Show you understand the difference between commercial and other types of law.
Why this firm? Even for an insight programme, showing you have researched the firm distinguishes you.
Why you? What are you hoping to learn? What experiences have sparked your interest?
Application questions
Some applications include short written questions, but the format varies by firm:
Motivation: "Why are you interested in commercial law?" Be honest and specific. It is fine to say you are exploring, but show you have done some research.
Commercial awareness: "Tell us about a current news story that interests you." Pick something from the business or legal world. Show curiosity.

Assessments firms may use
Some firms may use critical-thinking or other online assessments, depending on the programme. Watson Glaser is widely used in law recruitment generally, and you may encounter it at this stage or in later applications.
Watson Glaser Critical Thinking
Varies by versionProviders: Pearson TalentLens
Watson Glaser assesses critical-thinking skills such as inference, deduction and evaluation of arguments. Exact format may vary by version. The style of reasoning is unfamiliar to most first-year students, so practising beforehand helps.
Preparation tips
Do at least one full practice critical-thinking test. The format is unlike anything you have done at school or university.
Stick strictly to the information provided. Do not use outside knowledge.
Time pressure is common. Avoid spending too long on any single question.
Practice a psychometric test
If your programme includes an online assessment, doing one practice test removes the surprise and lets you focus on the questions rather than the format. Try one below.

What to expect on the programme
Some first-year programmes do not include a formal interview on the programme day itself, but firms may still assess candidates through the application process and interactions during the event. HSF Kramer's first-year page, for example, explicitly includes an interview in the application process.
It is sensible to approach the programme professionally, as firms may form impressions through your participation and interactions. Some programmes include workshops or interactive sessions that may contribute to how you are assessed.
Common question types
Questions you should ask
"What does a typical day look like for a first-seat trainee?", "What attracted you to this firm over others?", "Which practice area has grown the most in the last year?"
Questions to avoid
Anything you could easily find on the firm's website, questions about salary (it is published), or questions that suggest you have not prepared.
How firms score your answers
Engagement: did you participate actively and ask thoughtful questions?
Professionalism: were you polite, punctual, and appropriately presented?
Curiosity: did you show genuine interest in the firm and the profession?
Practice an interview question
Insight programmes rarely include formal interviews, but preparing your motivation and commercial awareness will help you make the most of every interaction during the programme.
While insight programmes do not typically include formal interviews, the skills you develop through interview practice (structuring your thoughts, articulating your motivation, discussing commercial topics) will make you significantly more impressive during the programme.
Attendees who can clearly explain why they are interested in commercial law, reference a recent deal or news story, and ask thoughtful questions stand out to the trainees and partners they meet. These are the same skills tested in vacation scheme interviews.
Use the time before your programme to practise: prepare a 60-second answer to "why commercial law?", read about the firm's recent deals, and prepare 3-5 questions to ask different people during the day.

Making the most of the programme
Insight programmes are primarily learning opportunities, and at some firms they may also contribute to how you are viewed for later opportunities.
Presentations
VariesPartners and trainees present on the firm, its practice areas, and the training programme. Take notes for your vacation scheme application.
Networking
VariesInformal conversations with trainees and associates. Be personable, ask genuine questions, and remember names.
Workshop (if applicable)
VariesSome firms include a group case study or workshop. Participate actively but do not dominate. Listen to others and build on their contributions.
How to stand out during the week
Make a note of useful conversations and insights you can reference in later applications.
Write down your impressions immediately after the programme while they are fresh. Note specific details about the firm that you can use in your vacation scheme application.
Send a brief thank-you email to anyone who gave you significant time.
Remember: the main value is for your vacation scheme application. Treat this as intelligence-gathering.
