The format
What the AlphaSights HireVue actually looks like
Timing: Issued following successful completion of initial testing.
Prep timer
Typically 30 seconds. Long enough to outline a STAR structure in your head, too short to write a script.
Recording
1.5 to 2 minutes per question. One take, no pauses, no edit. The platform records as soon as the prep timer ends.
Scoring
Transcript-based against six competencies. Tone and facial expression are not the primary signal; the words you say are.
Invitation timing. Invitation timing: Candidate reports suggest that the HireVue (or equivalent on-demand video assessment platform) invitation typically lands in your inbox within 3 to 7 business days following the online application submission for graduate and summer intern schemes. AlphaSights operates a rolling recruitment model for its Client Service Associate (CSA) and Client Service Intern programmes, meaning applications and subsequent digital assessment links are processed continuously as they arrive.

Why candidates fail
How candidates lose the AlphaSights HireVue
Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with disciplined preparation.
- 1
Rambling past the time limit
Failing to monitor the on-screen clock, leading to abrupt cut-offs mid-sentence before delivering a structured conclusion.
- 2
Excessive filler words
Allowing nervous verbal ticks (such as repeating "um" or "basically" multiple times per minute), which drops automated confidence scores below threshold levels.
- 3
Generic motivation answers
Providing superficial praise about the firm's reputation rather than demonstrating a working knowledge of the expert network industry model.
- 4
Ignoring the prep timer
Staring blankly at the screen during the 30-second preparation window instead of quickly outlining a 3-part structure (Situation, Action, Result).
- 5
Subpar technical environment
Recording in a poorly lit room with distracting background noise, unprofessional decor, or unstable Wi-Fi leading to audio distortion.
- 6
Eye-line failure
Staring fixedly at the written notes taped around the computer monitor or looking down at notes on a desk, which is easily flagged by reviewers as unnatural engagement.
- 7
Lack of quantitative impact
Describing team projects or past work experiences without citing measurable metrics, percentages, or concrete personal contributions.
- 8
Treating it like an informal chat
Adopting an overly casual tone, slouching, or failing to dress in professional business attire from head to toe.
What works
What separates candidates who pass
Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and recruiter feedback.
Rigorous STAR discipline
Delivering behavioral answers where 20% of the time establishes context, 60% details specific personal actions, and 20% highlights measurable outcomes.
Precise commercial vocabulary
Seamlessly weaving industry terminology (such as "primary research," "expert vetting," "due diligence," and "knowledge brokerage") into motivation and scenario answers.
Time-boxing execution
Utilizing the 30-second prep window to note down three distinct bullet points, ensuring the 90-second response flows logically without rushing.
Direct eye-line maintenance
Maintaining consistent eye contact directly with the webcam lens rather than the monitor screen, creating a strong sense of virtual eye contact with the human reviewer.
Calibrated pacing
Speaking at a deliberate, measured cadence (approximately 130 to 150 words per minute) to project calm executive presence under pressure.
Proactive problem framing
In scenario and curveball questions, immediately establishing a structured framework before diving into the tactical details.
Authentic alignment
Tying personal career drivers explicitly to AlphaSights' core values (such as results-orientation and intellectual curiosity) with concrete proof points.
Poise under artificial constraints
Maintaining an upbeat, energetic, and professional demeanor despite the lack of a live conversational feedback loop.

What gets you through
Five moves that decide the HireVue
- 01STAR every behavioural. Situation in one sentence, task in one, action in three, result with a number. The structure is the score.
- 02Cut filler words ruthlessly. Three filler words ("um", "you know", "sort of") drops your confidence score by ~6 points. Record yourself, count them, stop them.
- 03Use specific numbers. "Led a team" is filler. "Led a 6-person team that delivered £400k of revenue" is signal. Every behavioural needs at least one quantified outcome.
- 04Reference AlphaSights concretely. For motivation questions, name a specific deal, a person you spoke to, a division you researched. Generic "I admire the brand" answers are the modal failure mode.
- 05Practise on camera, not in your head. Reading answers to yourself is not the same as recording them. Filler words, eye-line, pacing: all only show up when the camera is on.
