The format

What the PA Consulting HireVue actually looks like

Five questions, 90s prep and 2 min recording each. Lead with your conclusion and spend ~70% of each answer on your individual actions.

Prep timer

60 to 90 seconds per question

Recording

2 minutes per video question (5 minutes for written responses)

Scoring

A hybrid model: an algorithmic layer transcribes the audio and scans for structure (STAR indicators) and competency or division keywords; the Early Careers recruitment team and capability leads then audit the transcript and video so nuanced or creative engineering answers are not mischaracterised.

Invitation timing. The HireVue invitation is dispatched within 7 to 14 working days for candidates who clear the benchmark on the initial task-based online assessments, depending on the rolling queue.

Completion window. A strict 48 to 72 hour completion window. Extensions are rarely granted outside documented medical emergencies or formal Equality Act 2010 adjustments.

Retake policy. The platform does not allow text or video retakes for individual questions once recording has concluded. If a technical glitch occurs mid-session, log a support ticket with HireVue and PA's early-careers team (earlycareers@paconsulting.com) immediately.

Volume context. PA receives tens of thousands of UK applications a year for small, capability-capped cohorts (mainly London Victoria and the Cambridge GITC). Roughly 35-40% of applicants clear the task-based assessments to a HireVue invite; of those who complete the HireVue, around 20-25% progress to the business review or technical testing phase.

Recent changes. PA has shifted away from purely static competency questions toward a hybrid job simulation: realistic client scenarios in PA's core sectors (Defence and Security, Energy and Utilities, Public Services, Healthcare and Life Sciences), mixing pre-recorded PA-consultant video briefings, written data snippets and short verbal video responses. Note: PA's video element is positioned variably across tracks, and some sources describe recorded or written responses embedded into later technical screens rather than a single standalone front-end stage.

Question categories

What PA Consulting actually asks, by category

The HireVue rotates across distinct question types. For each, what the firm is screening for, plus a weak answer signal and a strong one drawn from past applicant accounts.

Motivation

Why PA specifically, rather than a strategy house or a Big Four firm, and why this capability track.

Why have you chosen to apply to PA Consulting over other management consultancies, and how does our focus on innovation and ingenuity align with your career goals?

What they test. Understanding of PA's positioning as a firm that combines end-to-end strategy with physical engineering.

Weak answer. Generic praise for consulting plus the word 'ingenuity' lifted from the homepage.

Strong answer. Direct references to PA's distinctiveness: its ownership structure, its concept-to-physical-prototype model, or a specific public case study such as public-sector transformation or sustainable packaging.

What attracts you to your chosen capability track, and what unique value do you bring to this sector?

What they test. Domain interest and alignment between your background (often STEM) and PA's industry verticals.

Weak answer. 'I find energy interesting and want to learn how UK companies operate.'

Strong answer. Granular discussion of macro trends in that track, such as National Grid decarbonisation or legacy NHS IT, linked to your projects or research.

Behavioural / competency

How past actions align with PA's values: Inclusion and Diversity, Integrity, Innovation, Delivery and Care. Use STAR with the most weight on Action.

Describe a time when you had to solve a complex problem under a tight deadline with incomplete data.

What they test. Logical reasoning, structured execution and composure under pressure.

Weak answer. A narrative focused on how stressful it was, ending with 'we worked hard and handed it in on time'.

Strong answer. A structured account of isolating the missing variables, forming hypotheses, distributing work by a clear method and delivering a quantified result (for example, finishing 12 hours early for a first-class mark).

Tell us about a time you had to convince a sceptical stakeholder to adopt a new or innovative idea. How did you handle their resistance?

What they test. Influence, empathy and stakeholder management.

Weak answer. 'I told them my idea was better and eventually they gave in.'

Strong answer. Active listening to diagnose the root of the scepticism, data-backed prototypes or micro-tests to de-risk it, and a collaborative path forward that kept the team together.

CV walkthrough

How your academic choices, internships and leadership translate into readiness for advisory work.

Walk us through your academic and extracurricular journey, highlighting the experiences that prepared you for an innovation consultancy.

What they test. Coherent career narrative and the ability to synthesise succinctly.

Weak answer. Reading every CV line aloud, repeating grades and module names with no reflection.

Strong answer. A thematic overview capped at 90 seconds: why you chose your discipline, how a leadership role built project skills, and how those converge on PA.

What is the single project or achievement you are most proud of, and what personal qualities did you deploy?

What they test. Ownership, drive and self-awareness.

Weak answer. A passive achievement as part of a large group, focused on external accolades.

Strong answer. A specific challenge where you took clear accountability, deployed concrete skills and achieved a measurable, high-impact outcome.

Commercial awareness

Awareness of current affairs, UK policy shifts and macro trends that hit PA's client portfolio.

Identify a major technological trend disrupting the UK public sector or healthcare system. How should PA advise its clients to respond?

What they test. Macro-environmental awareness and PA's public-sector footprint.

Weak answer. 'AI is changing everything and the NHS needs more computers to save money.'

Strong answer. A precise issue such as automated triage or decentralised electronic health records, balanced against legacy interoperability, data-privacy compliance and civil-service budget cycles.

The UK is committed to Net Zero by 2050. Pick a sector PA serves and explain the primary commercial and operational barriers to reaching that target.

What they test. Sector-specific commercial insight and implementation realism.

Weak answer. 'Aerospace needs to build electric planes quickly so people can travel cleanly.'

Strong answer. An evaluation of UK Manufacturing or Utilities covering supply-chain decarbonisation, capex constraints on upgrading infrastructure and the role of green hydrogen.

Technical / capability-specific

For Data Science, Cyber Security, Digital Engineering or Applied Sciences tracks.

Designing a scalable cloud data architecture for highly sensitive citizen data, what trade-offs must you consider regarding performance, security and cost?

What they test. Structural tech literacy and architectural trade-off analysis.

Weak answer. 'Keep the database secure so it isn't hacked and don't spend too much on servers.'

Strong answer. A structured balance of high-availability caching against security frameworks (encryption at rest and in transit, zero-trust access) while managing cost via serverless elasticity.

Walk us through an engineering or coding project you developed. What methodologies did you use to test, iterate and validate your design?

What they test. Technical rigour, agile principles and engineering discipline.

Weak answer. 'I wrote a Python script with a few bugs and fixed them until it ran.'

Strong answer. The software or engineering lifecycle: unit-testing strategy, version control, failure-mode analysis and how test-bed or user data informed successive sprints.

Role-specific scenarios

Situational judgement reacting to unexpected project dynamics.

On a utility transformation, the client changes their core requirements mid-way, delaying delivery. How do you manage it?

What they test. Scope management, delivery ethics and structured problem-solving.

Weak answer. 'I would do whatever the client wants and work late every night to keep them happy.'

Strong answer. A structured impact assessment of the new requirements on budget and timeline, a transparent scoping workshop presenting data-driven choices, and a collaboratively re-baselined delivery map.

Your team is split on which technical solution to recommend to a government client: low-cost but short-lived, or expensive but future-proof. How do you facilitate a resolution?

What they test. Balanced commercial synthesis and consensus building.

Weak answer. 'Pick the cheaper one because government always wants to save money.'

Strong answer. A multi-criteria decision framework scoring Total Cost of Ownership, implementation risk and scalability, then a phased roadmap that mitigates immediate cost while preserving future upgrades.

Curveballs

Real-time lateral thinking when you cannot rely on a script.

With unlimited funding to automate or transform one everyday element of UK infrastructure or daily life, what would it be and why?

What they test. Creative ingenuity and resource-allocation awareness.

Weak answer. 'Make all public transport free across the country to reduce traffic.'

Strong answer. A specific bottleneck such as retrofitting old UK housing with networked smart heat pumps or IoT-optimised council waste collection, mapped to emissions and budget benefits.

Tell us about a widely used product or system you believe is poorly designed, and how you would re-engineer it.

What they test. Critical observation and design-thinking.

Weak answer. 'Airport security is annoying because it takes a long time.'

Strong answer. A clear UX flaw such as confusing EV charging-point interfaces, the root cause of the failure, and a specific engineering or workflow fix.

How it is scored

The PA Consulting HireVue scoring rubric

A hybrid model: an algorithmic layer transcribes the audio and scans for structure (STAR indicators) and competency or division keywords; the Early Careers recruitment team and capability leads then audit the transcript and video so nuanced or creative engineering answers are not mischaracterised.

Scoring dimensions

  • Structural communication (clear, conclusion-first, not rambling)
  • Action and ownership orientation ('I' over 'we')
  • Commercial and technical competence (UK constraints, regulation, technology realities)
  • Cultural alignment (care, integrity, passion for innovation)

Pass rates. Roughly 20-25% of those who complete the HireVue progress. The minimum pass score fluctuates with cohort capacity and rises as streams fill.

Response time. Typically 2 to 3 weeks during the rolling cycle.

Feedback policy. No individualised diagnostic feedback at this stage; an automated notification is sent and detailed reports are reserved for those who reach the final-stage assessment centre.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose the PA Consulting HireVue

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with disciplined preparation.

  1. 1

    Generic copy-paste answers

Reusing answers tailored for strategy houses or Big Four firms, with no reference to PA's strategy-plus-technology positioning.

  2. 2

    Poor structure and rambling

Spending 90 seconds on context and only 30 seconds on actual actions before the recording cuts off.

  3. 3

    The 'we' versus 'I' trap

Focusing on team achievements so reviewers cannot isolate your individual capability.

  4. 4

    Superficial commercial awareness

Mentioning Net Zero or generative AI without explaining how they apply to PA's actual clients.

  5. 5

    Ignoring technical realities

Offering high-level business answers on Digital or GITC tracks without the technical or scientific foundation.

  6. 6

    Poor pacing and monotone delivery

Rushing to finish in 45 seconds, or speaking in a flat, unengaging monotone that weakens the answer.

What works

What separates candidates who pass

Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and recruiter feedback.

  • Implementation mindset

Address both strategy and execution: not just what to advise, but how to deliver it past operational and regulatory hurdles.

  • STAR with strict time allocation

About 20 seconds situation and task, 70 seconds individual actions, 30 seconds quantified result and takeaways.

  • Points-first structure

State your recommendation or conclusion in the first 15 seconds, then break down supporting points.

  • Detailed PA portfolio knowledge

Reference real PA projects such as UKHSA work, defence procurement or carbon-reduction initiatives with major utilities.

  • Strong non-verbal communication

Look into the camera lens rather than at notes, keep a measured pace and use natural gestures.

From past applicants

How recent PA Consulting candidates approached the HireVue

Anonymised candidate accounts of how recent PA Consulting applicants approached the HireVue. Each covers preparation, the experience, and the outcome.

Graduate Rotational Programme, London (passed)

Prep. Read up on PA's public-sector work and digital-health transformations before recording.

Experience. Applied in late October as a final-year Economics student. After passing the keyboard-tapping and cognitive tests, the HireVue arrived on a Thursday with a 48-hour deadline: five video questions on motivation and behaviour. On the commercial prompt, discussed integrating automation with legacy NHS IT, balancing budget and data security, and spent ~80% of time on individual actions using 'I'.

Outcome. Invited to the next business-capability review ten days later.

Data Science Graduate, Cambridge GITC (passed)

Prep. Kept a notepad nearby for the written prompt and framed answers conclusion-first.

Experience. From an integrated Master's in Engineering, faced a hybrid structure: four competency and motivation questions, a data-driven business scenario (structuring a data architecture for a logistics client under volatile fuel pricing) and a short written prompt. Broke the answer into ingestion, model selection and deployment constraints and explained it for a non-technical stakeholder; held eye contact with the webcam and stayed calm through an interface lag.

Outcome. Progressed; treated it as a consulting test, not a coding test.

Summer Internship, Energy & Utilities (passed)

Prep. Completed the platform practice questions to check audio and get used to a blank screen.

Experience. Penultimate-year undergraduate in November. Faced why-PA, energy-market understanding and a team-conflict question, plus a curveball to critique a poorly designed everyday item. Chose UK public EV charging-point UX and proposed a simplified two-stage authentication, aligning with PA's practical-innovation focus. Used the 90-second prep to write a bullet framework.

Outcome. Invited to the virtual assessment centre exactly two weeks later.

What gets you through

Five moves that decide the HireVue

  1. 01STAR every behavioural. Situation in one sentence, task in one, action in three, result with a number. The structure is the score.
  2. 02Cut filler words ruthlessly. Three filler words ("um", "you know", "sort of") drops your confidence score by ~6 points. Record yourself, count them, stop them.
  3. 03Use specific numbers. "Led a team" is filler. "Led a 6-person team that delivered £400k of revenue" is signal. Every behavioural needs at least one quantified outcome.
  4. 04Reference PA Consulting concretely. For motivation questions, name a specific deal, a person you spoke to, a division you researched. Generic "I admire the brand" answers are the modal failure mode.
  5. 05Practise on camera, not in your head. Reading answers to yourself is not the same as recording them. Filler words, eye-line, pacing: all only show up when the camera is on.
