Palantir sifts candidates through HackerRank or a shared Google Doc before any interview. Below: the exact format, what each section tests, and how to practise it in identical conditions until you walk in confident.

The format

What Palantir's psychometric test actually looks like

There is no standalone online assessment in the conventional sense. Palantir's only pre-onsite assessment is a coding exercise, usually delivered inside the phone interview rather than as a test to complete in your own time.

Timed sections

Most psychometric tests split into 3-5 sections, each with its own clock. Speed and accuracy both count.

Adaptive difficulty

Modern formats get harder if you answer correctly, easier if you struggle. Your final score reflects what you can actually do under time pressure.

Pass mark

Palantir sets a pass mark per test type. Below it, you don't progress regardless of how strong the rest of your application is.

Completion window. Sent or conducted as part of the phone stage, which typically follows within one to three weeks of applying.

By division. Palantir states the number and format of interviews are personalised to your skillset and role, so the Software Engineer and Forward Deployed Software Engineer paths do not necessarily match.

The provider

What Palantir actually buys

Palantir configures its own selection of HackerRank or a shared Google Doc modules. Below: the exact products in the suite, why they were chosen, and what the provider's reputation is across the candidate pool.

History at Palantir. Named directly by Palantir in its own phone interview guidance: "if we've asked you to use HackerRank or Google Docs for the phone interview, make sure you have a stable Internet connection".

Candidate reputation. Not a psychometric vendor. Palantir uses no SHL, Cubiks, cut-e, Pymetrics or Watson-Glaser product at any stage.

Section breakdown

What each part of the Palantir assessment tests

Each section has its own format, timer and trap pattern. Worked examples below show exactly what you will see and where candidates drop points.

Live coding exercise

Within a phone interview Palantir states typically runs 20 to 45 minutes

What it tests. Correctness, readability and your ability to explain the approach as you go.

Common traps. Working in silence, or optimising prematurely before a working solution exists.

How to handle it. State your approach before you type. Get something correct working, then improve it out loud.

Complexity discussion

What it tests. Analyzing the Efficiency of Code, one of the six competencies Palantir publishes.

Common traps. Quoting a complexity class without being able to justify it.

How to handle it. Be ready for "now make it handle ten million records" and to say what breaks first.

Extending existing code

What it tests. Working Inside Existing Systems, another published competency and a large part of the real job.

Common traps. Rewriting rather than reading.

How to handle it. Read before you type, and say what you have understood about the existing code first.

How to practise

How to prepare for Palantir's screen

Palantir's online screen is a technical test (coding or quant), not a psychometric battery. A reasoning demo here would misrepresent what you'll face.

Focus your prep on the coding platform the firm names in its invite, and use Intervyo to sharpen the interview rounds that follow.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose Palantir's assessment

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with structured preparation.

  1. 1

    Preparing for the wrong assessment

Candidates revise numerical and verbal reasoning because that is what graduate schemes usually mean by an online assessment. Palantir sets none.

  2. 2

    Silent problem solving

The exercise is conducted live. An unexplained correct answer scores worse than a narrated partial one.

  3. 3

    Unfamiliar environment

Learning the editor during the interview costs time. Practise in a plain shared doc as well as in an IDE.

  4. 4

    Weak setup

Palantir specifically warns about dropped calls and unstable connections, and recommends a headset that lets you type comfortably while talking.

What works

What separates the candidates who pass

Concrete habits drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and practice patterns.

  • Practise coding in a Google Doc

No autocomplete, no syntax highlighting, no compiler. It is a genuinely different skill and Palantir names it as a possible environment.

  • Narrate assumptions explicitly

Say what you are assuming about input size, types and edge cases. This is directly assessed under Navigating Open-Ended Questions.

  • Volunteer the test cases

Saying how you would test the code, unprompted, hits a competency most candidates never mention.

Time management

Five moves that protect your score

  1. 01Set your own clock per question. Divide section time by question count. Move on when you hit your per-question budget, even if you are mid-thought.
  2. 02Read the question before the chart. Half the work in numerical is finding the right number in a table. Knowing what you are looking for cuts the time in half.
  3. 03Use "Cannot Say" generously. Verbal reasoning rewards strict reading. If the passage does not say it, the answer is "Cannot Say", not your own inference.
  4. 04Skip the impossible ones. Most tests do not penalise wrong answers more than skips. If you cannot see it in 20 seconds, flag and move on.
  5. 05Practise the exact format, not a generic stand-in. HackerRank or a shared Google Doc has its own rhythm, and a generic reasoning test is not the same. Intervyo's simulation is calibrated to this format, so you rehearse the real thing under real timing rather than a generic aptitude set.

FAQ

Palantir Psychometric Tests questions, answered

Not a psychometric one. There is no numerical, verbal, logical or situational judgement stage, and no external test vendor. What you will face is a coding exercise conducted live with an engineer, on HackerRank or in a shared Google Doc.
