The format

What Samsara's live interview actually looks like

Timeline placement: Candidate reports suggest the live interview stage occurs after passing an initial recruiter telephone screen and, depending on the role track, an automated technical assessment or online test.

Format

Live conversation, phone or video. 30 to 45 minutes. One-on-one with a manager or senior associate.

Interviewers

Manager or senior associate from your target team.

Structure

Interviewers probe weak answers. The candidates who get through handle follow-ups confidently, not just the headline question.

The rubric

How Samsara scores you

The interviewer is checking against a scorecard. Knowing the categories is half the battle.

Aggregation. Core competencies evaluated: Problem structuring, technical competence, communication clarity, alignment with company values, and operational ownership. Aggregation: Interviewers submit independent written scorecards through the applicant tracking system, which are then reviewed by the hiring manager or debrief panel.

How to practise

Live AI mocks tuned to the firm

Conversational mocks that read your CV, ask Samsara-specific questions, push back when answers are weak, and produce a scored report.

  • Reads your CV first. Vyo pulls real lines from your CV ("walk me through that deal you mentioned") instead of asking the same five questions everyone gets.
  • Follows up where answers are weak. Weak on numbers? Vyo digs. Vague on motivation? Vyo digs. No two runs are the same.
  • Matches Samsara's interview style. Friendly chat, professional grilling, or full-pressure. Calibrated to how Samsara actually runs the round.
  • Annotated transcript after every run. Strong lines green, wobbles amber, red flags red. Specific notes on what to fix and how to say it next time.

Interviewer

I see from your CV you completed Spring Week at Lazard. Walk me through a deal you observed during that placement.
I observed a £900M sell-side M&A in industrials. I assisted on the CIM financial pages, reviewed trading comps across 14 peers, and helped prepare management for the buyer meetings.

Interviewer

You mentioned trading comps. Walk me through how the peer set was selected, what criteria were used, and were there any borderline cases?

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose the Samsara live round

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with focused preparation.

  1. 1

Couldn't handle follow-ups on weak answers

Panicking or guessing when pushed on edge cases instead of reasoning through the problem.

  2. 2

    CV inconsistencies surfaced

Inability to explain timeline gaps, project contributions, or technical details listed on the resume.

  3. 3

    Failed to reference Samsara concretely

Treating the interview as a generic software or consulting pitch without mentioning physical operations or IIoT.

  4. 4

    Poor questions at the end

Asking superficial questions that could be answered via a basic Google search.

  5. 5

    Over-reliance on memorised scripts

Delivering robotic, rehearsed STAR stories that do not match the specific nuances of the prompt.

  6. 6

    Ignoring system constraints

Proposing solutions in technical rounds that violate memory, latency, or concurrency limits.

  7. 7

    Defensiveness under stress

Arguing with the interviewer when challenged on an assumption or design choice.

What works

What separates candidates who pass

Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the cut, drawn from applicant accounts and recruiter feedback.

  • CV walkthrough memorized and crisp

Delivers a structured, two-minute narrative highlighting relevant impact and ownership.

  • 3-4 anchor stories drilled cold

Prepares versatile STAR examples covering ambiguity, conflict, failure, and data-driven decisions.

  • Specific Samsara references

Fluently discusses Connected Operations Cloud, specific hardware units, and regional customer use cases.

  • Quality of the final question round

Asks sharp, insightful questions about engineering challenges, scaling hurdles, or product roadmap priorities.

  • Thank-you note discipline

Sends concise, professional follow-up messages reinforcing alignment within 24 hours.

  • Structured problem decomposition

Lays out a clear framework before writing code, drawing diagrams, or calculating estimates.

  • Active listening

Pauses to absorb interviewer feedback and incorporates hints immediately without friction.

  • Calm composure under stress

Treats curveball questions as collaborative problem-solving exercises rather than adversarial tests.

What gets you through

Five moves that decide the interview

  1. 01Have a CV walkthrough rehearsed. Two-minute version of your CV that connects every role to why this firm. Most interviews open with "walk me through your CV". Knowing yours cold is the foundation.
  2. 02Three anchor stories. Prepare three behavioural stories that demonstrate multiple competencies each. Reuse them, reframe them. You will get further than candidates with one story per question.
  3. 03Plant follow-ups in your answers. End answers with a hook the interviewer can dig into. "Happy to walk through the modelling if useful" turns one question into a longer conversation on your terms.
  4. 04Reference Samsara concretely. Specific deal, division, recent news, a person you spoke to at an event. "I admire the brand" loses to "I followed your work on the X transaction".
  5. 05Have two smart questions ready. For the "any questions for me?" close. Not generic ("what is the culture like"), specific ("what is the typical analyst staffing model on a cross-border M&A deal here").

FAQ

Samsara interview questions, answered

How should I schedule my interview slot?

Choose a time when you are mentally sharpest, ideally avoiding early morning slots if you need time to warm up or late evening slots when fatigue sets in.

What technology setup is required for video calls?

Use a reliable broadband connection, a dedicated web browser, a clean webcam feed, and an external microphone or headset to eliminate background noise.

What is the appropriate dress code for a UK video interview?

Business-casual attire, such as a tailored blazer, clean button-down shirt, or smart knitwear, aligns with tech sector expectations in London.

Where should I direct my eye-line during the interview?

Look directly into your webcam lens when speaking to project direct engagement, and look at the screen when the interviewer is talking.

What should I do if I am asked a question I do not know?

Do not guess or panic. State your initial hypothesis, explain what data or missing variable you would need, and talk through how you would find the answer.

Can I use a notepad during technical or case interviews?

Yes, keep a blank paper notebook and pen nearby to sketch system diagrams, jot down variables, or structure your thoughts before speaking.

What happens if I experience technical difficulties during the call?

Remain calm, use the chat feature if audio fails, or use the recruiter's emergency contact number provided in your invitation email.

How soon should I log on before the interview starts?

Log on three to five minutes early to test your camera, microphone, and internet connection without rushing.

Should I record the interview for my own practice?

Do not record live interviews without explicit written permission from all participants due to privacy and compliance policies.

How should I follow up after the live round?

Send a concise, personalised thank-you note to your recruiter within 24 hours to pass along to your interviewer.

Are notes permitted on my screen during video calls?

Avoid reading off hidden notes or digital documents; interviewers can easily detect when eyes are tracking text off-camera.
