The day
What the G-Research assessment centre actually looks like
Where it sits in the timeline: Candidate reports suggest that the Assessment Centre (AC) or final-round superday at G-Research represents the final hurdle of the recruitment cycle. It occurs after initial CV screening, automated quantitative or coding tests, and one or two rounds of remote technical interviews (often conducted via video call and shared coding platforms).
Duration
A full day, 5-7 hours. Multiple exercises back-to-back with short breaks. Fatigue is part of the test.
Cohort
Senior managers and partners. Each scores against the same scorecard.
Conversion
30-50% of attendees get offers. The firm only invites people they would seriously consider hiring, but performance on the day decides it.
The exercises
What each assessment centre round tests
Sector-specific breakdown. Each round has its own scorecard; consistency across all of them is what gets offers.
Competency interviews
STAR-format behavioural questions against the firm scorecard. One or two interviewers, multiple rounds.
Case study or presentation
A brief to read, a recommendation to build, a presentation to give. Tests structure and confidence.
Group exercise
Small-group problem-solving. Assessors watch contribution, leadership and respect for other voices.
Partner or senior interview
The deciding conversation. Tests judgement, motivation and culture fit.
The simulator

Rehearse the assessment centre free on Intervyo. Multi-stage scenarios mirror the real day's exercises in order, case work, technicals, behavioural rounds, lunch.
- Full-day simulation. 4 back-to-back rounds in the order G-Research actually runs them.
- Per-round scoring. Each exercise scored independently, then aggregated to a verdict. Same way the real day works.
- Fatigue calibration. Rounds compound in difficulty. Practising the full sequence exposes the late-day drop-off most candidates miss.
- Detailed debrief. After the simulation, a written debrief covering what would have got you an offer, what would have lost it.
Why candidates fail
How candidates lose the G-Research assessment centre
Specific failure patterns drawn from past attendee accounts. The day is a marathon, not a sprint, and most failures are about consistency across panels.
- 1
Fading energy in the late rounds
Letting fatigue compromise mathematical precision and alertness during the final afternoon panels.
- 2
Dominating the group exercise
Cutting off peers and failing to demonstrate collaborative listening skills.
- 3
Going silent in the group exercise
Offering zero verbal input or failing to stand ground when valid ideas are dismissed.
- 4
Not preparing partner-level questions
Asking lazy or generic questions that reveal zero research into the firm's core business.
- 5
Poor lunch behaviour
Lowering professional guard during the social lunch, appearing arrogant or dismissive to junior staff.
- 6
Inconsistency across panels
Performing brilliantly in algorithms while demonstrating weak foundational probability knowledge.
- 7
Refusing hints
Stubbornly ignoring subtle guidance or corrections offered by interviewers during case studies.
- 8
Lack of code structure
Writing messy, unreadable code during live modeling without commenting or considering edge cases.
What works
What separates candidates who get offers
Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the day, drawn from accounts of recent offer-holders.
Three anchor stories drilled cold
Having three detailed behavioral anecdotes covering failure, teamwork, and technical complexity memorized and structured for rapid deployment.
Specific G-Research references in every round
Citing the firm's unique technological scale, market neutrality, or academic publishing culture naturally in conversations.
Smart questions per interviewer
Tailoring questions to the specific background of the interviewer (e.g., asking infrastructure leads about low-latency data pipelines).
Energy management across the day
Utilizing water, scheduled breaks, and deep breathing to maintain peak cognitive focus through hour five.
Systematic problem breakdown
Stating hypotheses, constraints, and proposed approaches out loud before touching a whiteboard or terminal.
Calm adjustment under redirection
Smiling and thanking an interviewer who spots a flaw, then quickly integrating the correction into the working model.
Clean communication style
Explaining advanced mathematical proofs using intuitive analogies without sacrificing technical rigor.
Proactive time management
Keeping track of time during collaborative and coding exercises to ensure completion of core objectives.
Intellectual humility
Admitting when something is outside current knowledge rather than bluffing an answer.
Post-event professional courtesy
Sending concise, polite follow-up messages via talent acquisition if appropriate.
Rigorous fundamental review
Revisiting core calculus, linear algebra, and probability identities until second nature.
Understanding risk management
Demonstrating awareness of how quantitative models function within a risk-controlled portfolio environment.
On the day
Six moves that decide the offer
- 01Three anchor stories, drilled cold. Prepare three stories that demonstrate multiple competencies each. Reuse them across the day. You will hit the same scorecard line items from different angles.
- 02Reference G-Research in every round. Specific deals, named partners, division-level detail. The candidates who do this signal preparation in a way generic ones cannot fake.
- 03Treat lunch as assessed. It is. The senior staff at the table are scoring presence, small talk and substantive questions. Have two ready.
- 04Stay sharp in the late rounds. Most candidates fade after the third hour. The few who keep energy and structure into the partner round are the ones who get offers.
- 05Have two questions per interviewer. Specific to their role, not generic. G-Research interviewers compare notes; "what is the firm culture like" five times in a row gets noticed.
- 06Send a thank-you note. Short, specific, within 24 hours. Reference something each interviewer said. Most candidates skip this; the offer rate among those who do it is materially higher.
