Consulting rarely calls it a spring week

Spring week is banking's word. In consulting the same first-year programme is sold as an insight week at one firm, a discovery programme at the next, an immersion or an open day elsewhere, and sometimes a first-year programme with no season attached. Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Bain and the Big Four consulting arms each brand theirs separately, and the names change between cycles.

Searching last year's name can return nothing, and a firm may file the event under a heading that never says spring. The table above groups them by what they are, an insight programme for non-final-year students, so filter by the stage you are at, not by the label. Eligibility wording varies more here than in banking, so check whether a firm counts your year of study or your expected graduation year.

Consulting opens after banking, which makes autumn a second run

Consulting insight applications typically open in the autumn term, deadlines cluster from late November into January, and the programmes run over the Easter vacation in March and April 2027. Banking runs ahead of this, opening earlier in the autumn: see /tracker/finance-spring-week.

The gap is the useful part. If you spent September working out what you wanted, or applied into banking and heard nothing, the consulting round has not begun. Elsewhere a missed window costs a year; here it costs very little.

New programmes keep appearing into December

Consulting firms tend to sign off insight headcount late, and an unbudgeted programme is not advertised, so the list is incomplete on the day term starts. New rows appear through October, November and December, sometimes from firms that ran nothing the year before. Check back weekly through the autumn rather than reading the table once in September.

Your why consulting answer has to survive a swap

Most of these programmes do not gate entry on a case interview; where a case appears it is usually a group exercise on the day, and /tracker explains the standard stages. The written motivation answer carries the screen, and it is read for whether the reason you want consulting is a reason about consulting.

Test it: replace consulting with investment banking. If the answer still reads well, you have described an interest in business rather than a reason. Intellectual challenge, variety and fast progression are true of plenty of jobs. The work is more specific: short projects that end in an answer, being staffed on an industry you knew nothing about a fortnight ago, holding a view in front of someone who has run the business for twenty years. No technical knowledge is expected of a first year; one honest reason, stated as a position with two or three supports, is the exercise.

Common questions

What do firms call a consulting spring week?

Rarely a spring week. Look for insight week, discovery programme, immersion, open day or first-year programme; the wording changes between cycles.

Do I need to do a case to get in?

Not usually. Cases tend to run as a group exercise during the programme itself, so the written application decides entry.

I missed the banking rush in September. Is consulting still open?

Usually yes. Consulting insight programmes tend to open across the autumn term with deadlines from late November into January, a genuine second run at the cycle.

Why do new consulting programmes appear after term has started?

Insight headcount is often signed off late, and firms advertise once it is. That is why a weekly check through the autumn beats one look in September.

How do I answer why consulting without sounding generic?

Draft it, then swap consulting for investment banking. If it survives the swap, it is an interest in business, not a reason. Name the work instead.
