Firms word eligibility one of two ways, and the wording decides it. Some go by year of study: first year for law students, penultimate year for non-law students, which on a three year degree means second year. Others go by expected graduation year, and that is the one to read twice: a four year course, a year abroad, an integrated masters or a Scottish law degree leaves you further from graduating than the year-of-study reading assumes.

Transfers, deferrals and repeated years break that link. Where the two readings disagree, apply on graduation year, state your year of study on the form, and email graduate recruitment before the deadline, not after a rejection. Non-law students who plan to convert to law later still apply in the penultimate undergraduate year, not during the conversion course. Firms label these programmes insight days, open days or workshops, the same naming spread consulting has.

At every later stage a firm has something else to look at: a transcript, a critical reasoning test in the Watson Glaser format, an interview record. Here there is nothing but school results you cannot change and a form you can. Many firms run no test at all at first year stage, screening on the written answers and assessing you in person on the day. It is the one point in the cycle where a few hundred words you control sit this close to the whole decision.

Two answers carry it. Why commercial law has to separate commercial law from law in general: a City firm sells advice to businesses on transactions and disputes, so show you know that is the job, not a courtroom. Say what pulled you to the business side, and name something you have done that tests the claim. Why this firm needs one concrete thing from the firm's own site, a practice area, a sector, a matter it discusses publicly, joined to that same interest. One specific reason beats three general ones.

Open days and first year schemes are what you can apply to this autumn; winter and summer vacation schemes belong to the years after, and the hub carries the wider calendar. Take the smaller thing seriously for what it feeds: at most large commercial firms the vacation scheme is the main route into a training contract, and first year programmes exist to fill it, so strong attendees are often given a faster path into vacation scheme selection. Check what each firm commits to, because the days matter less than the route they open.
