Spring weeks arrive before you have anything to put on the form
Applications for spring 2027 open in the autumn of 2026, a few weeks into first term, for a programme that runs in the following Easter break. Everyone applying is in the same position: school results, one term of university, no finance experience. That is the design of the format rather than a fault in your application. Opening dates matter more than closing dates in this cycle, and the reason is set out on /tracker.
Eligibility turns on how long your degree runs and whether it includes a placement or a year abroad, and a four-year course is treated differently from firm to firm, so read the line on each programme rather than assuming. The divisional motivation answer carries the application
Most banks make you pick a division at the point of application: markets, investment banking, asset management, technology. You are choosing before you have real grounds to choose, and the written answer is where that shows. A weak answer describes the bank, its size, its reputation, the culture page you read the night before. A strong one describes the work. It says what someone in that division does on an ordinary Tuesday, and it is specific enough that it could not have been written about the division next door.
The test is portability. If you can swap in another bank's name and the paragraph still stands, you have written about wanting a job in finance rather than about wanting this one. The rest of a strong answer closes that gap: one concrete thing you did or followed, what you took from it, and why it points at this division. A society stock pitch, a valuation you attempted and got wrong, a market you have been reading about all term. A modest true example beats an inflated one, because the follow-up question comes in the interview.
Word limits are short at this stage, so a sentence carrying only enthusiasm is a sentence not spent on evidence.
What an accelerated route into summer 2028 skips
Conversion is why this is worth your first term. Banking runs spring programmes as a scouting round for the following summer internship, and that internship is the main entry route to the graduate programme. Having watched a cohort for several days, a bank can shorten the route back for the people it rated. In practice that can mean an invitation to apply outside the open pool, skipping some or all of the online testing stage, and in some cases joining the interview process at a later round. What gets skipped differs by firm and by year, so ask the people running your week.
The trade is that the week itself is the assessment. You are watched across several days, in networking sessions and group tasks, by people who will be asked afterwards who stood out. That is a different exercise from performing once in a scored interview. It is a shorter route into summer 2028, not an offer.
Common questions
How do I write a motivation answer with no finance experience?
You write about the work rather than about yourself. Name what the division does day to day, then attach one real thing you did or followed and what it taught you. Small and true is fine. Nobody in the pool has experience at this stage.
Which division should I choose if I do not know yet?
Choose the one you can evidence. The application is division-specific, so the answer you can support with something concrete will outperform the division you find more impressive in the abstract.
Does a spring week guarantee a summer internship?
No. It can shorten the route: an invitation to apply outside the open pool, fewer online tests, sometimes a later entry point in the interview process. What is offered varies by firm, and it is worth asking directly during the week.
How many spring weeks should I apply to?
Enough that several rejections do not end your cycle. The written answers overlap less than people expect, since each one has to name a specific division, but the real cost of each extra application is sitting the assessments.
Can I apply to more than one division at the same bank?
Usually not in the same cycle. Most banks take one application per applicant per year, so the divisional choice is a decision rather than a hedge. Check each firm's wording before submitting.
