At most large City firms the summer scheme is not experience bolted on to recruitment. It is the recruitment. Many fill trainee intakes predominantly, and some only, from their own cohorts; several have closed direct applications. Check each firm for a <a href="/tracker/law-training-contract">direct training contract route</a>, but plan around the scheme.

The decision lands years early: a summer 2027 scheme normally converts to a training contract starting in 2029 or 2030, so the form you send this autumn settles where you qualify. The fortnight in the office is an extended assessment centre ending in a training contract interview. Penultimate-year law and final-year non-law students compete in the same round, so most get one attempt.

Law is one of the few graduate routes that leads with critical reasoning rather than numerical testing. The Watson Glaser critical thinking appraisal is the usual first hurdle, in five sections: inference, recognising assumptions, deduction, interpretation, and evaluation of arguments. It often arrives days after you submit, with a short completion window: treat it as part of the application.

It is not a knowledge test. Each question asks what follows strictly from the passage in front of you, and nothing else. The habit that earns marks in a tutorial essay, importing what you know and arguing the probable case, produces wrong answers here: an inference that is only plausible counts as false, and an assumption you would readily grant a writer is often not one the passage makes. Passages lean policy and regulatory, which makes reaching outside the text tempting. Practise timed, before you apply.

Motivation answers run to a few hundred words, with each firm setting its own limit. Two things sink them: praise that could be pasted onto any competitor, and a chronological retelling of your degree and jobs. Some firms read nothing until the deadline passes, then sift in one pass; others read as forms arrive, filling interview slots on the way. Against the first, submitting on the closing day costs you nothing. Against the second, places can be spoken for before the printed date.
